I’M TALKIN’ ABOUT SHAT
13th Oct
I’ve decided to ditch Carnival Of Souls for the Late In The Summertime video because it needed a male actor to go with the lyrics. I might use Carnival Of Souls for Break It Down instead of Dementia, Or not use it at all which is a pity because the title font took me ages and it’s got some cool imagery.
But anyway what this video needed was an actor of true stature. One with great theatrical range and charismatic screen presence. An actor with the sheer acting chops to launch my music video to where no music video has gone before…
William Shatner!!

.
The Shat himself.
Don’t panic Trekkies, it’s not the public domain just yet (not for about 40 years anyway), but plenty of Roger Corman’s films are and this is one of them, The Intruder starring the future Captain Kirk in his first leading film role in 1962.
Roger Corman was King of the B-Movies in the 50’s and 60’s and churned out hundreds of low budget movies some of which were surprise hits at the drive-ins such as Little Shop Of Horrors. Most of his films were daft horror films and a bit later more counter-culture type films before becoming a producer and distributor of European art films in the 70’s. The Intruder was perhaps his one and only serious film, in this case a story about racial segregation. Shatner plays a white supremacist (dressed in an all white suit) and gives it his best Hitler impersonation at a town hall speech before it all turns sour after he tries to lynch an innocent black guy on a swing!

I won’t be using any of this footage! Or, the bit where the Ku Klux Klan turn up in corvettes and burn a church down. I’ll just be using the parts where Bill is driven around town and gets off with some local girls (though I might sneak in a burning cross because there’s not much else footage I can use).
I spent about a week removing the opening title credits from the film using various AI software so I can use it in the video and it seems to go well with the song. It’s not finished yet but in the meantime here’s an instrumental of the new dreamy mix of the song (see below) which features The Wrecking Crew strings sampled from Just Once In My Life by The Righteous Brothers and the vibraphone sampled from Come Go With Me by Gloria Jones.

NOTHING WITHOUT YOU

I uploaded the Nothing Without You video to my various channels, here it is:

I decided not to give it it’s own blog post, I’ll be putting it in the forthcoming Music Video’s Part 4 as one of the last 3 videos. That’s because I’m doing the Late In The Summertime video to Carnival Of Souls and have done a NEW dreamy version of the song with strings. Here it is:
Late In The Summertime (New Version)
updated mix, 2nd Oct

I realized with hindsight that the vocals didn’t fit with the uptempo version I made with the Wrecking Crew. The vocals were recorded to a quiet acoustic version and don’t really work over the Spector thing so I’ll be keeping that as an instrumental and the one above will be the official version of the track.
Hopefully this next video won’t take too long.

SIREN SONG
I’ve finished the Nothing Without You video in HD but want to give it it’s own blog post so need to archive this Latest News page first before uploading it. It’s 9.10 minutes long and the file size is 3.5GB’s!
I’m using an early mix of the song with strings (see previous post) for the video. The strings are a bit rough around edges and incomplete for the last 3 minutes but somehow sound better when mixed than the completed one’s.
These are the completed strings, you can hear them playing “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” at one point but the famous melody gets drowned out under the song:
NOTHING WITHOUT YOU (ISOLATED STRINGS)
Here’s the poster, I’ll upload th video in the next few days:

MAGNUM OPUS ALERT!
I’ve completed a rough edit of the Nothing Without You music video and It’s NINE MINUTES LONG!! Now I’ve got to re-edit it all again in HD quality.
The movie I’ve used for the video is Night Tide starring 60’s counter-culture legend Dennis Hopper in his first leading role from 1961. It’s about a sailor on shore leave who falls in love with a girl who performs as a mermaid at a fairground by the sea with strange and tragic consequences. The girl is under mind control by a witch woman played by Jack Parson’s wife. It’s got great visuals, occult themes and the Hop playing a nice guy for once.
Here’s the mix of the song I’m using for the music video:

STRINGS AND THINGS
For the last month I’ve been working on the strings for Nothing Without You and editing the music video. The video is over 9 minutes long due to the intro (from Night Tide) being over a minute long. First I need to complete the song which is taking shape quite well with strings which are sampled from 4 different versions of the track “He Ain’t Heavy… He’s My Brother”.
Here’s the latest mix of the track which I’m adding the strings too. It has some minor tweaks to vocal and piano:
NOTHING WITHOUT YOU (NEW MIX)
.
and here is a rough mix of the instrumental with partially completed strings:
NOTHING WITHOUT YOU (ROUGH STRINGS / INST.)
They’re far from finished, the strings from about 5 minutes onwards are just rough guides or not done at all. These are the tracks I’m sampling the strings from (below), it’s mainly The Hollies and Neil Diamond with the second half featuring Kelly Gordon (loud parts) with Bobby Scott’s version (who wrote the song) featuring here and there.
