This is the new version of Late In The Summertime with instrumentation.
I sampled the instruments from The Righteous Brothers track Just Once In My Life which was written by Goffin & King and produced by Phil Spector in 1965. The musicians are session band The Wrecking Crew who played on many classic hits in the 1960’s.
Late In The Summertime was originally a demo recording with just acoustic guitar and vocals, I wrote the music and melody and Paul wrote the lyrics. I edited it all note by note / beat by beat and it took me about 7 weeks to complete.

Production Info
Most of the samples for strings, choir, bass, piano and electric guitar are taken from the middle 8 section of the song with the drums sampled from the verses. I had to create my own drum rolls to fit the song and the choir was edited from tiny samples taken from in between the vocal lines then overlapped to produce longer harmonies. This is because I couldn’t separate the main vocals from the backing singers. The strings were done the same way with lots of speed and pitch changing to get them to fit.

.
I decided against re-creating the Wall Of Sound production and mixed it to suit my song instead because the drums needed to be louder to drive it along.
Here’s the full arrangement without the vocals:

Here’s the original version we recorded on acoustic guitar:
Late In The Summertime (Original Version)
The acoustic guitar was heavily re-edited to the click track and there was lots of editing on the vocals so that the phrasing fitted properly. I also made some pitch alterations, removed some of the vocal glitches and created some refrains for the end section. Here’s the new vocal with guitars, strings, choir, vibraphone & piano:

The drums took the longest to do, probably about 3 weeks to get everything down including drum rolls which I had to edit together to fit the song. The drummer is Hal Blaine, who played on dozens of hits in the 60’s as The Wrecking Crew’s main drummer. I think the bass player is Carol Kaye, but they had several bass players, and I can’t find any info on the recording. I did a 2nd bassline on an online keyboard as a guide track which I kept in to fill out the sound. Here’s the drums and bass with the guitars:

Here’s the song I sampled featuring Phil Spector’s Wall Of Sound production:
Just Once In My Life
and The Righteous Brothers performing it in 1965. The samples I used can be heard on the middle 8 section, the quiet bit and the build up to the last chorus which has most of the strings, choir, electric guitar, bass and piano I used on it. This part uses the same chords as my song.

I’m making a music video for Late In The Summertime, it was difficult to edit to the acoustic track so hopefully I can do better with this new version. You can see my music videos and other songs on The Rivers page (see top).
